Charles Slender grew up in San Diego, California and graduated with honors from the University of California, Berkeley, with degrees in both Dance and Performance Studies and English Literature. His choreography has been presented on both coasts in the US, by the Fringe Club in Hong Kong, and has been commissioned by Dialogue Dance (Kostroma, RU), Chelyabinsk State Pedagogical University (Chelyabinsk, RU), and three times by the Ekaterinburg University of the Humanities (Ekaterinburg, RU), where he was the Artist in Residence for 2007/2008. In 2006 and 2007 Charles was a company member of Provincial Dances Theatre (Ekaterinburg, RU), where he also taught company class and was a faculty member in its School of Contemporary Choreography. Charles was on faculty at the American Dance Festival in 2007, and has also taught master classes and led workshops in Russia, the United States, Mexico, and Hong Kong. As a teacher and choreographer, Charles is interested in both the virtuosic and the banal, affective performance, the fallacy of stable identities and identifications, and the intersections of classical and contemporary techniques.
